Aqualectra, as an energy company, has the responsibility to supply water and power to our community. Of late, due to the economic growth of our island, we have seen that the demand for power is also growing. Aqualectra considers that it is its task and obligation to comply with this demand and that is why it is doing its utmost to reach the capacity that is necessary to comply with the demand.

Taking into account the present growth in the demand for power and also the investment plan for 2009, derived from the 2030 management plan, Aqualectra entered the process of expanding its diesel plant at Dokweg with 2 new production units, each having 5.3 MW. That will be a total of 10.6 MW. At present, the plant has a capacity of 37.5 MG, and with this expansion, the total capacity will grow to 48.1 MW.

At present, Curaçao is registering a daily demand of approximately 125 to 130 MW. In addition to this diesel plant at Dokweg, there are also the plants at Mundo Nobo, the diesel plant at Isla, the BOO plant and the windmill parks at Tera Kòrá and Playa Kanoa which form a part of the power production regimen.

The signing ceremony of the Dokweg diesel plant expansion contract with Wartsila in Finland and also with the company MNO Vervat here in Curaçao for the civil part of the works took place at Dokweg. The construction and installation activities for this expansion will take place during approximately 11 months. It is expected that the machines will be operating by June 2010.

Energy Commissioner, Mr. Humphrey Davelaar, performed the ceremonial act to initiate the expansion activities at the diesel plant at Dokweg.

The Management of Aqualectra is confident that this expansion of the diesel plant at Dokwe, our utility enterprise, has taken the next step in order to be able to comply better with the demand for power and thus also contribute to a constant development of our community in every sense of the word.
